Student Job

This topic remains for us, as usual, one of the most sought after advice from our visitors through Email and Forum. And we understand that it is a very important factor for you to know before you plan your education in Germany. - You are always a full-time student in Germany. That means among other things you will spent most of your time in University. But it is also very common here that you as a student, work during weekends, vacation or even parallel to your Study. As a student, you are allowed to work either 90 full-days or 180 half-days in a year (§16 Abs. 1 AufenthG)

Besides these, you can also work at University, mostly as so-called HiWi (Wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft = Student/Research Assistant). This kind of academic job can be done without any time limitation. That means, even if your 90 full-days job have been used. And there are many advantages doing such jobs than other jobs, which claim physical stress. So you have to differentiate between two kind of job permition for you, namely

  • 1. General Work permit for Students (Hier applies 90 full-day rule)
  • 2. Student Job (Studentische Nebentätigkeit: You work for University, / No time limitation / )

For detail read §16 Abs. 1 AufenthG // Residence Act for education or training (Sections 16-17) //

Basically you can do such HiWi Jobs for more than 60 hours a month and earn about 480 Euro. depending upon your subject field you may be able to work even more or less. Mainly Medical Students, be alerted (we receive many Emails specially about job for medical students). At the other hand, medical students have sometimes better opportunity to work as a HiWi, like in a research Group in University Hospital. Which might be fruitful, if you intend to do your doctoral thesis in the same department later on.

The new immigration law:

Reducing the number of different residency permit titles from five to two: the limited resident permit "befristete Aufenthaltserlaubnis" and an unlimited resident permit "unbefristete Niederlassungserlaubnis". The new laws regulating foreigners would be more focused on what qualifications the foreigners have to offer. Highly qualified people would be able to receive an unlimited residency permit for themselves and their families to either set up their own business (with a minimum investment of 1 million Euros and offer employment to ten people) or be employed in Germany from the very onset of their relocation to Germany instead of going through a very tedious process involving two to three different residency permits. This would also allow highly qualified people to come to Germany without having a job based on their specialization and the requirements.

Foreign students who are completing their education in Germany will be allowed to live in Germany for a period of 1 year after completion to search for jobs. The concept of a "one-stop government" is to be followed whereby the foreigner's office and the employment office will decide via an internal process to offer one of the two residency permits instead of applicants having to go to one office after another for a residence permit and a work permit. Some of the old laws shall be maintained for example people with not enough qualifications shall not be permitted to enter the country or the rule of priority which states that all jobs have to be offered to German first then Europeans shall remain in force. In addition, the law also provides with language and integration courses to help foreigners integrate into German society. The integration courses shall be paid for by the German government.

Searching Internships:

Finding an internship (in German: "Praktikum") as a foreigner at a German company is not as difficult as finding a permanent job, especially if the German company has a subsidiary or wants to expand its business into the respective home country. Internships are common in Germany as many German students pursue internships during their studies. It is one of the most important recruiting tools in Germany.
